Group therapy

Groups are at the center of our treatment program. Each session includes teaching, experiential learning, and group dialogue in a safe and caring space. Our group coordinators lead the group sessions with an open heart and a firm back. Some of the specific subjects of teaching and discussion include issues such as courage, patience, and integrity, among others. In addition, participants will get a clearer understanding of the effects that substances have on their bodies and  minds.

Group dialogue is an important part of the session and it is organized to be respectful and honest as people share their experiences. The dialogue is structured to strengthen participants ability to process emotions, manage interpersonal communication appropriately, reduce impulsive behavior, and tolerate distress.

Another important component of group therapy is interactive journaling that helps participants to own their story.  As participants learn more about themselves and what is important to them, they create their own plan along with their own intention and motivation to carry it out.

Additional unscheduled activities can include physical movement, meditation, relaxation exercises, music, videos, and various types of playful activities. Every week one of the group sessions receives a surprise free lunch.

Individual therapy

Intensive care includes up to two sessions per week of individual therapy. Your therapist will help you to stay on track as you move forward and connect with the things that are important to you. Individual therapy is a place to explore daily challenges that arise and to develop effective responses. Self-mastery, that is, the ability to choose one’s own attitudes, thoughts, and behaviors, is the opposite of addiction. Your therapist is a key member of your support team for developing freedom from compulsive behaviors.
